Rape victim family forced to drop case for `35,000
In yet another case of insensitivity of society towards rape victims, a family of a minor girl was pressurised by the village panchayat to drop case of rape against the rape accused, a 60-year-old man, in Kahi village of Fatheabad district.
In a very insensitive overture, the Khai panchayat asked the family members of 13-year-old rape victim to settle the case in `35,000 and drop the charges against the accused. The accused, Sohan Lal, was a fruit vendor outside the school of the victim and raped the girl for over five months. The police has now arrested the accused as the medical examination of the girl has confirmed rape. The accused has been sent on a fourteen day judicial custody by the Ratia duty magistrate.
The incident came to light when some of the villagers took strong exception to the proposal of the village panchayat. According to villagers, Kahi panchayat, which met last week, mounted pressure on the victim’s father to hush up the matter.

Cops still waiting for medical report
Age Correspondent
Bengaluru, Oct. 15
The 20-year-old National Law College student, who has complained of gangrape, was brought to the Vani Villas Hospital for the second time for more tests on Monday afternoon. But as it was a government holiday on Monday and the doctors were not present, she was not subjected to any tests. In all likelihood, she would again be brought to the hospital on Tuesday morning, say hospital sources.
On Monday, she was brought to the hospital by two women police officers from the Jnanabharathi police station around 4 pm. She had been subjected to some tests on Sunday.
Police teams investigating the suspected gangrape in the Jnanabharathi campus are still waiting for a medical report from the Vani Villas Hospital to ascertain whether the allegations made by the victim are true.
“Only the medical report from the hospital can confirm if the student was raped. The report is yet to reach the police. Investigations are on and we are on the lookout for the rapists,” said ACP T. Suneel Kumar.
