Rajya Sabha: Status quo in some states
The states that will not see any change in terms of the strengths of the parties in the Upper House include Maharashtra (six), Gujarat (four), Chhattisgarh (one), Karnataka (four), Andhra Pradesh (six), Orissa (three), Madhya Pradesh (five), Himachal Pradesh (one), Rajasthan (three) and Haryana (one).
However, Bihar and Uttarakhand are set to witness some changes as the parties’ respective strengths have altered since the 2006 Rajya Sabha elections.
In Bihar, from where two RJD members are retiring next month, only one can be sent back, giving the ruling NDA an advantage. Similarly, with the Congress having a slender lead over the BJP in Uttarakhand, the latter would not be able to replace its lone retiring member from the state in the Rajya Sabha.
