Raju influencing witnesses: CBI
New Delhi, Oct. 19: The CBI on Tuesday alleged in the Supreme Court that B. Ramalinga Raju, the main accused in the Satyam scam, was trying to influence witnesses.
Seeking the cancellation of his bail, the additional solicitor-general, Mr Haren Rawal, appearing for the CBI, told a bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma that the agency had in its possession a confessional letter stating that Raju had tried to influence officials of a company.He said this when Justice Bhandari asked whether the CBI had any evidence on Raju’s attempt to influence witnesses.
Mr Rawal cautioned that continuous freedom to Raju during the pendency of the trial would have adverse effect on the proceedings of the entire case.
“There are thousands of witnesses and many companies involved in the transaction and we need to testify their evidence,” the counsel said. “Raju is trying to influence the witnesses.”
However, Raju’s counsel, Mr Mukul Rohtagi, opposed the CBI allegations and termed them as baseless. Mr Ashok Desai, who also appeared for Raju, said that his client was granted bail on health grounds as he was “genuinely” sick. “Even after the release from the prison, he had remained in the hospital,” Mr Desai submitted.
