Rajnath opposes Raje as Opp. leader in Rajasthan
Senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh, during whose tenure former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje was asked to quit as Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly, has complained to the RSS against her comeback to the post. Sources said Mr Singh also registered his protest with the BJP high command in this regard.
Mr Singh, it was learnt, is miffed by the fact that when the party’s highest body, the parliamentary board, had taken the decision against Ms Raje continuing as LoP, her reinstatement will send a wrong message.
Ms Raje was unanimously re-elected to the post of Leader of the Opposition on Saturday after she was elected as BJP legislature party leader, more than a year after she had to relinquish under party pressure. Sources said that due to a lack of leadership in the BJP’s state unit, the former Rajasthan chief minister was re-elected as the post was lying vacant for more than a year, sending out a wrong political message.
Both the BJP and the RSS had asked Ms Raje to quit the post after the BJP’s dismal performance in both the Assembly and the Lok Sabha polls in Rajasthan. Though she remained defiant for months, she resigned after the BJP high command assured her of a berth at the central level. Ms Raje is also the national general secretary of the party.
Senior BJP leaders from Rajasthan had met the BJP high command recently to sort out the issue. Though the names of senior leaders Gulab Chand Kataria and Ghanshyam Tiwari Tiwari were doing the rounds to succeed her, no consensus could be reached among the state unit leaders. Both Mr Tiwari and Mr Kataria had boycotted the election of the legislature party leader.
