Rail station stampede kills 15 in Allahabad
Fifteen persons were killed and over 20 others injured when the railing of a foot overbridge leading to Platform 6 of Allahabad railway station gave way due to the heavy rush of passengers. Unconfirmed reports said over 20 people were feared dead and 30 injured in the stampede at Allahabad station.
Allahabad divisional railway manager Harinder Rao reported 15 deaths, and said the stampede occurred at 7 pm when Platforms 5 and 6 were packed with thousands of passengers.
State officials are yet to confirm the toll. IG (law and order) Badri Prasad Singh said from Lucknow the number of deaths couldn’t be confirmed.
“Our priority is to restore normality as heavy crowds are at the station. We want to clear the rush as soon as possible. We have also made arrangements for the treatment of the injured, but have no confirmation of the number of those who have died in this mishap,” he said.
Local vendors at the station claimed nearly 20 people had died, but official sources said many had fainted and were undergoing treatment. The injured have been admitted to Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital.
