Rail freight charges go up in Oct, no fare hike
Minister of state for railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said Tuesday that while there would be no hike in rail passenger fares in October when the fuel adjustment cost is due to come in effect, but freight charges would go up. He did not, however, specify the quantum of hike in freight charges.
The fuel adjustment cost proposed in the Railway Budget has to come into effect every six months, and the next one is due on October 1. The railways had effected a hike in passenger fares last year after a decade’s gap, once a Congress leader headed the ministry after over 17 years.
“Tariffs have already been increased, and as per the budget proposal it will be hiked again in October,” the minister said. The railways had last freight rates by 5.7 per cent on April 1, after linking the fuel adjustment component with goods tariff.
