Rail doctor, wife held for torturing maid
A young doctor, working with the railways, and his wife have been arrested by the police in Lucknow for allegedly assaulting and torturing their 22-year-old maid. The police arrested Dr Ashutosh Singh, his wife and their domestic help David along with their family friend Waris, late on Tuesday night and all four have been sent to jail after being produced before a magistrate. According to the complaint filed by the maid, who belongs to Bahraich, she came to work at the doctor’s house in the Metro City complex on April 23 this year.
The maid accused the doctor, his wife and another help David of assaulting her repeatedly and accusing her of stealing a gold earring. She was thrashed and hot oil was poured on her.
The victim admitted to have picked up a gold earring but said that she was planning to return it to the doctor’s wife who was not at home then. Shortly after the wife returned, she questioned the maid about the earrings. When the maid returned the earrings, the doctor’s wife accused her of stealing the same.
“They beat me up and kept me hostage in the flat on the sixth floor. I managed to escape when the couple went to sleep and climbed down into the courtyard of judicial officer’s flat on the fifth floor of the building with the help of my dupatta. It was only after the judicial officer’s family informed the police that I was rescued,” the victim said. The girl was sent for medical examination after which the complaint was registered. Burn marks were visible on her hands.
