Rahul: Parties lack internal democracy

On the last day of his Maharashtra tour on Saturday, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi blamed the lack of internal democracy within political parties as the reason for the youth not joining politics. Expressing shock over the death of additional district collector Yashwant Sonawane, Mr Gandhi also demanded stringent action against corruption.
“I have complete faith in the younger generation of our country, but they avoid venturing into politics because political parties do not have internal democracy. Political parties no more appeal to the youth. Because of dynastic politics and corruption, the youth do not enter politics. We need to change this system and for that all political parties need to change,” Mr Gandhi said at a press conference held in Aurangabad.
The Congress leader further said that he is trying to bring about changes in the Youth Congress. He said that unlike before, office-bearers will not be selected from New Delhi, but through elections. “Earlier, when people joined the party, they were asked two questions in the membership form. What was the name of their father and their grandfather? In the Youth Congress, we only ask them their name, that is it,” he said.
Mr Gandhi further stated that the present political structure was slowly rotting. “We have to change this. The answer lies in opening the doors of the political system,” Mr Gandhi added.
In an appeal to the youth to join the Youth Congress, he said, “My request to youngsters who are educated and talented is to take a look at the Youth Congress website. Come and help me build the structure.”
On the burning of Sonawane in Nashik by the oil mafia, he said, “Corruption is a serious issue. It is a symptom. We have to see that the symptom does not spread,” he said.
Mr Gandhi also said that collective efforts were needed to tackle corruption and his party had taken stern action against corruption. “Corruption is taking place because the doors of the political system are closed and the average person who wants to do good work, is not allowed in,” he said.
