Rahul: Cong can take 2 ‘Hindustans’ forward

Enthused by the appreciation and encouragement, which he received from seniors in the party, including his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, young leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday showcased his vision of politics and understanding of India by claiming that there existed “two Hindustans — one of rich and the other of poor”.

Noting that the country’s politics till now has generally been stereotyped, as other parties have been indulging in “either regional or caste or religious” divide, the AICC general secretary said, “The Congress, which not only rejects such distinction for political purposes, has the sense of responsibility to take along the two Hindustans — one of rich and the other of poor. And this Congress can do because we are the only national party.”
The young leader, who sat in back row on the dais at the AICC session here, was forced to speak on a popular demand by the Congressmen gathered there. “This (his speech) was not part of the plan. You cornered me at the last minute,” he said amidst loud cheers and clapping by partymen.
Endorsing Dr Manmohan Singh’s economic policies, he said, “If we have to bring forward the poor people of this country we have to work like Dr Singh, who is giving economic growth to this country that’s what we need.” Sharing his vast experience which he gathered from his extensive travels across the country and interaction with a cross-section of people, Mr Gandhi said, “I have understood two things clearly. First is that it is only the poor people who can take the country forward. And if we have to take the poor people forward, the Prime Minister’s strategy for economic growth is a necessity.”
Appreciating his contribution, Dr Singh, Mrs Gandhi and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said Rahul is a “catalyst” who has brought a new generation to the party fold.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
