Radia tapes: Supreme Court to hear Tata''s plea today

Dec 13: The Supreme Court will on Monday hear Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata's petition seeking an investigation into the leakage of tapes containing his private conversation with corporate lobbyist Nira Radia.

The petitioner has also sought a stay on any further publication of the leaked conversations.

In his petition, Tata also sought action against those involved in the leakage of tapes alleging that such an act amounts to an infringement of his fundamental Right to Life, which includes the right to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution.

The petition, prepared under the guidance of senior advocate Harish Salve has contended, that since Radia''s phone was tapped for the purposes of alleged tax evasion, it cannot be used for any other purpose.

The apex court, which had received the original Radia tapes from the income tax department''s director general of investigation, had ordered its safe custody under seal with the court registrar.

It has sought reply affidavits from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Union finance Ministry, I-T department and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to find out how the tapes were leaked.

The apex court had also directed the two magazines, which had published the conversations, be made parties to the petition by Tata and have issued notices to them also.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier questioned Radia for her alleged role in the scam.

Radia was summoned after the tapes exposed how she had allegedly lobbied with senior journalists and telecom companies and asked them to pay their part in the 2Gscam.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
