Punjab Cong helpline for ‘vendetta cases’
Till now you may have heard of toll-free numbers offered by companies for customer care services.
In a first of its kind initiative, the Punjab Congress is coming up with a toll-free helpline number for its workers who, according to them, are facing “vendetta cases” by the ruling SAD-BJP government.
To formerly start the toll-free helpline number, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee has formed a special team. The team will be headed by Supreme Court lawyer Jaiveer Shergil.
There have been a lot of allegations by the Congress that its workers were suffering at the hands of the ruling SAD government as a number of vendetta cases were registered against them to harass them. Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal asked the Congress to come out with a list of such cases if it really wanted to prove it.
Now PPCC officials say that the real purpose of starting a toll-free helpline is the first step towards the process of documentation of vendetta cases.
According to Mr Shergil, the co-chairman of the state Congress’s legal cell, the first step would be to come out with the data of such cases and then compile it.
after that, representations would be given to the state police and human rights commission, besides Mr Badal.
Giving details of the new initiative, Punjab PCC officials said they would appoint district coordinators to instill confidence in Congress workers.
The workers would be assured that no vendetta cases would be tolerated. These newly-appointed district coordinators would hold legal camps to provide information on how to benefit from social welfare schemes, including the NREGA as well as how to get the benefits of the RTI Act to extract information.
