Punjab: Ambika Soni elected unopposed
Union minister Ambika Soni was on Thursday elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab.
Congress nominee Soni and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) general secretary Balwinder Singh Bhunder were declared elected unopposed after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations for the two seats ended this evening, Punjab Vidhan Sabha secretary and returning officer Ved Parkash said here.
While information and broadcasting minister Soni has been renominated by the Congress, Mr Bhunder has replaced Raj Mohinder Singh of SAD.
Mr Vijay Darda and Mr Avinash Pande (both Congress), Mr Tariq Anwar and Mr Ishwarlal Jain (both NCP), Mr Piyush Goel (BJP) and Mr Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena) were on Thursday declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra.
An announcement to this effect was made by principal secretary of Vidhan Bhavan, Anant Kalse, after Kanhaiyalal Gidwani withdrew his papers on the last day of withdrawal on Thursday for the biennial elections to fill six vacancies from the state. The polling was slated for June 17. —PTI
