Punjab: All cops, even constables, are officers
All police personnel in Punjab have been re-designated as “officers” irrespective of whether they hold the rank of a constable or director-general police.
Drawing from the recommendations contained in the draft version of the New Punjab Police Rules, the DGP, Mr P.S. Gill, on Thursday signed an order that designates
constables and head constables as “junior enrolled officers”, assistant sub-inspectors, sub-inspectors and inspectors as “senior enrolled officers”, and those of and above as “superior police officers”.
Also in a related move to “motivate” the force, DGP Gill initiated an exercise that will give every member, including ministerial staff working with the police department, permanent unique identification numbers. “Every police officer, from constable to DGP, will have UIDs,” a spokesman said.
