Proposal to recruit more women in Central forces
In the coming days, more women will be seen in the armed forces with the Centre deciding to show the way to significantly increase women’s presence in the forces.
The parliamentary committee on women empowerment met on Thursday where it was recommended that the Central forces pave the way for recruitment of women to increase their strength from the present 1.5 per cent. The top police brass, including state women police officers, attended the meet. Suggestions were also made to hold special drives in the coming days. The demand has been growing since the December 16 gangrape in Delhi last year.
At the state level , women constitute around 3.97 per cent of the total strength of police forces spelling the need to increase their representation. Besides, there are just 499 all-women police stations in the country out of a total 15,000 stations.
For the first time, the parliamentary committee heard the view of the state women police officers with the latter suggesting that the first step needs to be the creation of facilities for women at the workplace.
Some suggestions were made to allow voluntary retirement facilities for women, mobile toilets, and more importantly equal opportunities. “Women constitute 50 per cent of the country’s population. We want that the police forces should also give fifty per cent representation to women,” said a woman police official who attended the meet. The state women police officers pointed out that there should be no gender discrimination while delegating duties.
