March 22: AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s verve and energy, his emphasis on youth power, inner-party democracy and clean politics seems to have impressed Kerala’s young lot, for they admire him more than any other politician.
The Deccan Chronicle C-fore survey, conducted among the youth (in the 18 to 25 age group) in Kerala had almost 26 per cent of respondents choosing Mr Gandhi as the politician they admire most. Of this, 22 per cent were male respondents while 31 per cent were female.
The need for clean politics also comes to light in the choice of the second-most admired politician — defence minister A.K. Antony— who is respected even by his rivals for being ‘clean’. He has 14 per cent voting in his favour.
Around 10 per cent of the youth also admired 87-year-old CM V.S. Achuthanandan. His perch is just after the suave and polished MP, Mr Shashi Tharoor, who has earned the admiration of 12 per cent of the respondents for his style and substance. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi inspire only eight per cent of the youth.
