Prince Charles, wife likely to visit Patiala in October

Heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, and his wife Camilla are likely to visit the city next month when they will be in India for the Commonwealth Games.

The British royals will visit New Moti Bagh Palace of former Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Amarinder Singh, after the inauguration ceremony of the Games in Delhi.

The Palace sources said here on Thursday that the royal couple will be on a private visit and be hosted by Mr Amarinder Singh, who himself is from the erstwhile royal family of Patiala state, and his wife Ms Preneet Kaur, who is also minister of state for external affairs.

The arrangements are already underway in view of their visit.

Though it is yet to be confirmed by the British High Commission in Delhi, a team of British officials was in the city recently to prepare for his visit scheduled on October 4, a day after the prince attends the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

A team headed by the private secretary to Prince Charles, Clive Alderton, visited the New Moti Bagh Palace here.

An exquisite royal banquet is being planned, where the menu will include centuries-old recipes once reserved only for royalty, the sources said.

The Prince of Wales first visited the city in March 2006, when Amarinder Singh was the chief minister of Punjab.

Prince Charles had interacted with local farmers involved in organic and sustainable agricultural practices and also inaugurated the Bhoomi Vardaan Foundation, created on the lines of Duchy Originals — an organisation he set up in 1992.

While Charles is on his second visit, the last Prince of Wales to come to the city was his great-uncle Edward (later Edward VIII) who stayed at the old Moti bagh Palace in 1922.

Prince Charles is expected to stay for a night here. The royal couple would visit Jodhpur the next day, the sources added.
