Prez hosts ‘At Home’ for leaders

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, vice-president Hamid Ansari, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Union Cabinet ministers and leaders of various political parties and MPs on Sunday attended the “At Home” hosted by President Pratibha Patil on the occasion of Independence Day.
Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, Ms Sushma Swaraj and Mr Arun Jaitley, were among the senior leaders present on the occasion. Mr D. Raja was the prominent Left leader to be present at the function.

Lady officer bags medal for gallantry

A lady Army officer of the rank of Major is among several Army personnel who have been awarded the Sena Medal (gallantry) this Independence Day. Major Mitali Madhumita of the Army Education Corps, has been awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry shown during the attack on the residential compound of the Indian embassy in Kabul.
On February 26 this year, a guarded residential compound of Indian embassy in Kabul, housing six Army medical officers, four paramedics and two other Army officers of the English Language Training Team was attacked by heavily armed terrorist suicide bombers.

Sino-India border meet on I-Day

In what may accelerate the improvement in the situation at the Sino-Indian Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Ladakh sector, the Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) held a border meeting at the “Indian Border Personnel Meeting Hut at Chushul” on Sunday to celebrate the Indian Independence Day.
The Chinese delegation, led by Senior Colonel Awng Yang Dei, was received by the Indian delegation Leader Brigadier Y.K. Joshi. “The Indian flag was hoisted and both the Chinese and Indian delegations saluted the tricolour. The meeting was held in an atmosphere of camaraderie,” sources said.
