Pranab renews support plea to all ‘undecided’
UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukher-jee on Sunday urged all parties still unsure of their stand to vote for him.
After arriving here on a special flight from Chennai, Mr Mukher-jee met Congress MLAs and MPs from the state at a specially-convened meeting at Jubilee Hall. He later told the media: “Immediately after my candidature was declared by the UPA, I appealed to all parties to support me. Some like SP and BSP are supporting the UPA from outside, while the CPM, JD(U) and Shiv Sena, not part of UPA, have also announced support. So I am meeting them personally to thank them.” He added: “But there are other parties opposing the UPA in Parliament who have not declared their stand yet. I am still appealing to them to support my candidature.”
On NDA candidate P.A. Sangma’s remark that a “miracle” would happen, Mr Mukherjee simply said: “I don’t believe in miracles.”
He noted he was no longer in the Union Cabinet. “I am non-partisan now. I cannot speak on politics. An elected President is barred from politics, and has uphold the Constitution, and follow whatever the Cabinet headed by the PM advises him.”
