CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat may face the pressure to step down from his post when the party Congress takes place in Kozhikode in April next year.

The party congress will take stock of the electoral debacle in West Bengal after 32 years and defeat in Kerala and is expected to rework its political strategy.

The CPI(M) central committee, meanwhile, will meet in Kolkata next month to discuss the political line and strategy before it is finalised at the Congress.

Indicating a shift in the political strategy following the electoral debacle in Bengal and Kerala, party sources said that instead of going in for mere electoral alliances, the party would focus on major issues and organising united actions with Left and democratic forces, besides taking steps to strengthen its own mass base across the country.

Sources said that the coming together of anti-Left forces in Bengal will be discussed and the priority would be to resist attacks and mobilise the people against the Congress-led UPA at the Centre and Trinamool Congress-led state government in the state.
