Post-poll violence rocks Murshidabad district
Murder and mayhem continued to rock Murshidabad district even a day after the panchayat election. In the post-poll violence in the district, five persons were killed on Tuesday. So far a dozen people have died in Murshidabad in the past three days in poll-related violence.
Two Congress workers were killed in separate incidents in Ranitala area. In Lakhsmi Narayanpur village, 45-year-old Congress worker Pairuddin Sheikh was allegedly shot dead by CPI(M) miscreants at around 8 am. He was taken to Lalbag sub-division al hospital where he was declared dead. Another Congress worker Azizul Sheikh 65 was severely wounded with a sharp weapon when miscreants launched an attack on him at Natungram village under Ranitala police station. He reportedly died on way to hospital. In another incident, a CPI(M) cadre Phatik Sheikh, 30, was killed in a bomb explosion when another gang of miscreants hurled bombs at him at Sankopara in the Farakka police station area. He was the uncle of CPI(M) candidate Bedana Bibi.
A Trinamul Congress worker was killed when a clash broke out between TMC and Congress workers in Bidhupara village in Shaktipur. 30-year-old Nakibuddin Sheikh was reportedly killed in a bomb explosion.
Meanwhile, a CPI(M) worker from Hasanpur village succumbed to his injuries at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. Congress workers had allegedly attacked Mantu Mondal 40 and his brother on Monday in which Mondal had sustained serious injuries. Notably, in the fourth phase panchayat election on Monday, the district of Murshidabad had witnessed three deaths while three persons were killed in pre-poll violence on Sunday.
Minister of state for railways Adhir Chowdhury alleged that Congress workers were killed jointly by Trinamul Congress and CPI(M). “They have joined hands to kill Congress workers,” he said, adding that 8 Congress workers were killed in the last four days. CPI(M) leader Mriganka Bhattacharya blamed Congress-backed goons for the killings of their cadre. “So far, 11 of our supporters have been killed by Congress goons in the district since the panchayat election was announced,” Mr. Bhattacharya claimed.
Interestingly, chief minister Mamata Banerjee blamed Congress and CPI(M) for the mayhem. “There was no firing and throwing of bombs in the first three phases of the polls which went off peacefully. Those fighting for area domination used bombs and guns. But they should be prepared to face the consequences. The law will not spare them,” she warned. Meanwhile, 87 per cent polling in Murshidabad was recorded while the districts of Malda, Birbhum and Nadia recorded 86.75, 86.67 and 87.47 per cent turn out respectively. The secretary of state election commission (SEC) Tapas Ray on late Tuesday evening said that there would be repolling in 9 booths in Murshidabad on July 25. Repolling would also be held in 7 booths in Malda, 2 booths in Nadia and one in Birbhum on the same day.
