Polio victim raped, 1 held
The Gorai police on Friday arrested a man who has been raping a polio victim since 2009, with the promise of marriage.
The police said that the man, who had recorded objectionable videos of the victim, threatened to circulate them after the woman insisted on getting married.
Abhijeet Mandre (27) befriended the 30-year-old victim from Charkop through a social networking site. The two then began meeting often. “During one such meeting, the accused video recorded their intimate moments and saved them in his cellphone,” said an officer from Gorai police station. After this, Mandre met the victim at several places like Mira Road, Bhayander etc., where the accused allegedly raped her.
The victim saw the cellphone clips during one of their meetings, and objected to it. At the time, Mandre managed to convince her and promised that he would marry her soon.
However, recently, when the victim asked Mandre to marry her, he threatened her saying that she would have to continue to have sexual relation with him or he would circulate the video he had stored in his cellphone. “She then approached the police. We have arrested Mandre for rape and threatening the victim. We will be producing him before the court on Saturday,” added the officer.

Baby theft sparks panic
Age Correspondent
Mumbai, Oct. 26
Following the theft of a day-old baby from Parel’s Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital, an atmosphere of fear and discomfort has been created as mothers are taking turns to guard their newborns, not willing to even keep them in an incubator. The 30-odd women in the ward sleep with their babies clutched by their side, rather than putting them in the crib with the fear that they might be stolen.
“I am scared to leave my baby and go to the washroom at the end of the corridor. I wait till my husband or my mother-in-law are by the child’s side,” said Sonam Tike, who was in the ward when an unknown woman stole Jasmin’s baby on Wednesday.
Another woman, whose child suffers from jaundice, has to walk to and fro between her bed and the incubator kept on one end of the ward.
“I don’t feel like going back to my bed. I just hope we get discharged soon. At least my baby will be safe at home,” she said echoing Ms Tike’s fears.
There is at least one nurse inside the ward at all times and two sit outside on their posts. “All sorts of people, including police as well as political parties, have been making trips of the ward since Wednesday. We cannot stop anybody from meeting Jasmin. There is only so much we can do within our reach,” said a junior nurse on duty.
Meanwhile, Jasmin, whose baby was stolen on Wednesday, sat distraught on her bed. “There was not a single nurse or ayah the day my baby was stolen. There is not even a latch to the ward door. What security are they talking about? I just want my baby back,” cried Jasmin.
