Police lathis for Cup crowd
Crowd frenzy for Sunday’s India-England World Cup match led to a mild lathicharge before the Chinnaswamy stadium Thursday morning as the Bengaluru police tried to bring some order among the thousands of fans lined up for tickets.
Some fans were injured as the police pushed them back when they tried to break the queue soon after the counters opened at 8.30 am.
“There was little respect for queues as there were more than 15,000 waiting fans. We had to intervene and do a mild lathicharge to make sure the situation did not get out of hand,” a senior police officer said. The injured were taken to a hospital for treatment and sent home.
While around 7,000 tickets were sold within about three hours, KSCA secretary Javagal Srinath said more tickets would be available online.
