PMO for report on oil spill
The PMO is learnt to have sought a report on the recent oil spill off the coast of Mumbai which was the result of two cargo ships colliding. The PMO, it is learnt, has sought a preliminary report on the oil spil from the shipping ministry.
The Panamian cargo ships, MSC Chitra and merchant vessel Khalija collided off the Mumbai coast on Saturday, leading to the oil slick caused by Chitra which was carrying a cargo of diesel and lubricant oil.
In the Rajya Sabha, Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh said on Monday that the Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board has already initiated legal action against the owners of the ships during Zero Hour. He said this following concern expressed by members over the oil slick.
The minister further said that the government would make a detailed statement on the issue in Parliament on Tuesday.
Amidst growing concern that the oil slick may spread, teams from both the Navy and the Coast Guard are busy battling it and trying to contain it. However, despite the efforts, there are concerns that it may take at least a month to clear the coastal waters entirely of the slick.
