PM to visit US Sept. 25-30
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be in the US from September 25 to 30 next month, in a visit that will include participation in the UN General Assembly session and a bilateral meeting with president Barack Obama.
The dates have been conveyed to New Delhi by Washington and the two sides will be hoping to give their ties some momentum after the plateau on which they seem to have settled.
As part of the initiative to give bilateral relations some impetus, New Delhi has seen two high-level visits from the US in the last couple of months. First was the visit by US secretary of state John Kerry in June followed by one by vice-president Joe Biden in July.
Both the sides will be hoping to finalise a commercial agreement between Nuclear Power Corporat-ion of India Limited (NPCIL) and Westinghouse for the setting up of nuclear reactors at Mithi Virdi Nuclear Park located in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district. US-based firm Westinghouse and NPCIL will sign a contract “denoting their commercial commitment” for reactors to be put up in Gujarat.
Mr Kerry, who came to New Delhi to participate in the India-US strategic dialogue, had pushed for the early signing of the commercial agreement
The US has been seeking the finalisation of the agreement for quite sometime to enable the beginning of nuclear commerce between the two countries. What has hampered the hammering out of this deal are India’s nuclear liability laws.
