PM, Obama plan to meet in September
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to have a one-to-one meeting with US President Barack Obama in Washington in September during a six-day visit to the United States, when he will also attend the UN General Assembly session. Dr Singh is expected to arrive in the US on September 20, but it was officially clarified late on Tuesday night that no dates for his meeting with Mr Obama have been finalised yet.
The plan for a bilateral Singh-Obama meeting became known after the PM’s 75-minute meeting with visiting US vice-president Joe Biden here on Tuesday. Sources said the two leaders discussed a whole range of issues, more specifically the implementation of the Indo-US civil nuclear agreement, besides ways and means to enhance trade and commerce. Major regional and global issues, including Afghanistan, also figured in the talks. The US is due to withdraw most of its military forces from Afghanistan next year, and the fallout of that is a matter of concern for India. Dr Singh is learnt to have told Mr Biden he was looking forward to meeting President Obama once again in September, the sources added.
