PM fully backs PC, rules out infighting
In the context of the whipping up of a controversy implicating Union home minister P. Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum affair, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed full confidence in the minister.
As the PM came out to brief journalists on the flight, a question was thrown at him about the purported letter that suggests Mr Chidambaram’s presumed involvement in the 2G imbroglio. Dr Singh replied firmly, “I had confidence in Mr Chidambaram when he was finance minister and he continues to enjoy my confidence as home minister.”
It has been suggested that a finance ministry note was leaked by Mr Pranab Mukherjee to get the present home minister in trouble as Mr Chidambaram was finance minister when the 2G issue was brewing.
Asked about infighting in the council of ministers, Dr Singh said, “I don’t think this is an instance of infighting.” Janata Party chief Subaram-anian Swamy had got a finance ministry note though the RTI Act and filed it in the Supreme Court seeking to implicate Mr Chidambaram. This note is a finance ministry memorandum which was sent to the PMO on March 25 this year.
