PM accepts responsibility; Sushma OK, but not Jaitley
Differences of opinion surfaced within the BJP over Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj’s remarks on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement on the CVC appointment issue. While Ms Swaraj felt the PM’s clarification in Jammu on Friday on the appointment of P.J. Thomas as CVC was “enough” and wanted the matter to “rest”, her counterpart in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Arun Jaitley, reacted by saying the “PM’s statement (in Jammu) was not enough. PM needs to explain more.” A majority within the BJP was of the view that Ms Swaraj’s statement was contrary to the party’s official line on the issue.
A day after the Supreme Court quashed Mr Thomas’ appointment, the PM said, “I respect the judgment of the Supreme Court and I accept my responsibility.” The BJP also said it needs a “structured response in Parliament” from the PM and that “just a casual comment on owning responsibility is not enough”.
Writing on a micro-blogging website, Ms Swaraj said, “I think this is enough. Let matters rest at this and we move forward.” She also wrote that she “appreciated” the PM’s statement owning responsibility.
