Perception about BJP worries LK
In his concluding remarks at the BJP’s two-day national executive meeting on Friday, senior party leader L.K. Advani called the UPA government the most corrupt and ineffective government in the history of independent India. However, he also expressed concern over the perception about the BJP.
“I am sad when I hear people saying that the BJP is also not fulfilling expectations. It is a caution for us,” Mr Advani said. He appealed to all party workers to pull up their socks, reach out to every citizen and convince them that the BJP is the alternative for the Congress.
To drive his point home, Mr Advani pointed out that the Trinamul Congress led by Ms Mamata Banerjee was able to oust the CPI(M), which had been enjoying power continuously for 30 years, only because people saw it as a credible alternative.
He added that the BJP itself came to be seen as an alternative to the Congress after 1990 only because of the sheer work that the party had put under the effective leadership of senior leader Atal Behari Vajpayee. “The message that the BJP is the answer has to be conveyed effectively,” he told the meeting. He reminded the members that Mr Vajpayee and he together had also successfully expanded the NDA from a mere three-party formation to a formidable 26-party coalition.
The BJP national executive also passed a political resolution on the last day of its meeting. The resolution concluded that the UPA has made a mess of governance in the country. “The people feel miserable because of the corruption, indecision, inflation. They look up to the BJP. It is our duty to rise to the occasion and assure the people of the country that the BJP is indeed the instrument, which will redeem India,” the party said in the resolution.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj also stressed that the party’s efforts in Parliament are not enough to topple the UPA government, but the party organisation should become stronger and fight against the government on the streets. “We have pushed the government on the backfoot in Parliament. But even when it is not in session, we need to continue our fight on the streets,” Ms Swaraj said.
Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley sounded most positive. According to Mr Jaitley, as the national mood is anti-Congress and the third front experiment, already “tried and failed”, the BJP is the only alternative for the Congress. “The BJP must now be ready with a plan and direction to restore the national economy,” he said.
