PC against forming of new GoM
Union home minister P. Chidambaram was against any referral of proposed legal changes to tackle “honour killings” to a Group of Ministers, sources said. But speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mr Chidambram said: “The intention is to introduce the bills in the Monsoon Session, and the whole process will be completed before the session ends.”
Formally announcing the decision to refer the matter to a GoM, information and broadcasting minister Am-bika Soni said: “Many members wanted to put across their views but a discussion was not possible as a decision was taken to consult states and set up a GoM on the issue.” She added that the PM will constitute a GoM to discuss the Cabinet note in greater detail. It will also consider the responses of the state governments on the issue. “We do feel the pressure to bring the amen-dments in the Monsoon Se-ssion,” she said. Taking note of the recent spurt in “honour killings”, the SC had in June sought a response from the Centre and eight states on steps taken to prevent such incidents.
