Pawar sets off new row with ‘revenge’ for Ishrat remark
Union agriculture minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday kicked up a controversy, saying that Ishrat Jahan had been falsely implicated, and if someone connected or not connected to her family decided to take revenge, then that person could not be faulted.
Speaking at an NCP function in Pune, Mr Pawar said, “An innocent girl (Ishrat Jahan) studying in college became a terrorist? Today, all those officers who were involved (in that encounter) have had to go to jail. The court has monitored the case because of which the truth came out. But what about the family? The whole family might suffer if such injustice happens to their child and seeing this, if some person from some other family gets angry, then you can’t hold that person guilty.”
It was not the only controversial statement that Mr Pawar made.
Mr Pawar also claimed that it was his suspicion that led to the arrest of Abhinav Bharat activists in the Malegaon bomb blast case.
Two bomb blasts took place in Malegaon in 2006 and 2008.
While the anti-terrorism squad arrested nine Muslim boys in connection with the 2006 blasts, Hindus associated with Abhinav Bharat organisation were arrested in connection with the 2008 blasts.
