Parties: Don’t suspend 2 TDP MPs
Most of the political parties, including the BJP, AIADMK, TMC, Left, SP and JD(U), on Tuesday strongly objected to parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath’s suggestion to P.J. Kurien, who was in the chair in the Rajya Sabha, to invoke Rule 255 to suspend two TDP members for the “unruly behaviour” inside the House.
The two members were protesting against the proposed division of Andhra Pradesh. The House later also witnessed an argument between Prof. Kurien and AIADMK member V. Maitreyan over an issue related to adjournment of the House.
Dr Maitreyan contended that Prof. Kurien had promised to adjourn the House at 3 pm till 3.30 pm but it was not done. He was protesting over this issue. Some members from the Opposition benches were also seen supporting him. Prof. Kurien responded by saying there was no breach of trust as “it was my sincere effort to run the House”.
“When the House was not running, it pained me. Am I failing in my duty? I adjourned the House. I was party to the decision to adjourn it till 3.30 pm. But when I entered there was calm... what can I do,” he said. According to Dr Maitreyan, it was agreed to adjourn the House at a meeting between the leaders at the chamber for another 30 minutes after convening at 3 pm. Amid the din, the House was adjourned at around 3.15 pm for 15 minutes but the ruckus continued when it was convened.
When the House reassembled, Dr Maitreyan continued with his protest and even tried to disrupt defence minister A.K. Antony who was about to make a statement about the killing of Indian soldiers on the Line of Control. At this point, the Chair again adjourned the House till 4 pm.
Earlier, Dr Maitreyan, along with other members, took strong objection to Mr Nath’s suggestion of invoking Rule 255 against TDP members Y.S. Chowdary and C.M. Ramesh, who were raising slogans for a “United Andhra”.
