Pak Army fires for 6 hrs at LoC
The Army on Saturday said that Pakistani troops violated November 2003 ceasefire yet again by opening fire towards Indian forwards posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch sector on Friday night.
The fresh ceasefire violation, which the Indian Army termed as the “biggest ceasefire violation” in recent times, came four days after five Indian Army jawans were killed and another wounded in a sneak attack by alleged Pakistani troops and militants in the area, setting off new tensions between the two sides.
Official said the Pakistani troops opened fire on several posts of the Indian Army around 10.20 pm on Friday. Indians returned the fire and the intermittent exchange continued for some time. No causalities were, however, reported on the Indian side.
“Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on several Indian forward posts along the Line of Control in Durga Battalion area in Poonch district around 2220 hours last night,” defence spokesman S.N. Acharya said on Saturday.
“They fired 7,000 rounds of heavy weaponry Pika ammunition and medium mortars targeting several Indian posts in order to cause heavy casualties till 0430 hours,” the spokesman said, adding that it was “biggest ceasefire violation”. “Our jawans gave a calibrated response to the firing. There has been no word on the Indian charge from the Pakistani side so far,” the defence spokesman said.
