PAC grills Law Secy on A-G opinions
Senior BJP leader M.M. Joshi-headed Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Friday questioned the secretary B.A. Agarwal over two “contradictory” opinions of the attorney-general on a CAG report. Several members, it was learnt, expressed unhappiness with his reply. A-G G.E. Vahanvati could not appear before the parliamentary panel as he was learnt to be busy with his court schedule.
The PAC had summoned the two over the A-G’s contradictory” opinions on a CAG report which said expenditure on interest payment on tax refunds was in contravention of constitutional provisions.
The PAC had taken up certain paragraphs of the CAG report on “Expenditure incurred on interest on refunds of taxes” for examination.
The law secretary is learnt to have defended the A-G’s opinions saying that the country’s top law officer gave a fresh legal opinion based on the new situation which had evolved after going through certain aspects.
