Outrage after Mumbai horror: 1 suspect held

As angry protests erupted across the country over the gangrape of a 22-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai, the police arrested one of the five accused in the case. The hunt for the remaining four rapists was continuing at the time of going to press.

Chand Abdul Sattar Shaikh, who is in his 20s and lives in the Dhobighat area of Mahalaxmi, is the sole accused arrested so far. Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh said Shaikh confessed to his crime and revealed the identities of his four accomplices. A forensic team has been pressed into service, he said. “The police is trying to gather clinching evidence to ensure that the culprits get the maximum punishment for the shocking crime,” Mr Singh added.
