Orissa collector freed at last
After a nine-day drama, the Maoists finally released Malkangiri collector R. Vineel Krishna Thursday evening, handing him over to a group of mediapersons at Doliamba, a cut-off village in the Chitrakonda-Balimela reservoir area, 750 km from here. He was abducted February 16.
Malkangiri District Rural Development Agency project director Balwant Singh was sent to Chitrakonda to receive the collector. He is expected to reach the district headquarters by 10.30 pm. A relieved chief minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters: “I am glad the collector (was) released today and junior engineer Pabitra Mohan Majhi was freed yesterday. I’m sure their family members are very happy.” To a query, the chief minister said the state had not bowed to Maoist demands. “We made certain commitments on their demands, and the state government will honour these,” he added.
