Opinion polls giving BJP, RSS jitters as vote nears
Led by Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, a confident BJP is rapidly becoming an extremely worried party. Most opinion polls have indicated the saffron party might not cross the 160 mark in the Lok Sabha election on its own, which is a major cause of concern for the Sangh Parivar. The BJP will need at least 190 Lok Sabha seats on its own to come close to power. Relentless efforts to “sell” Mr Modi to the people were not evoking the expected response.
This dismal scenario was discussed at Thursday’s crucial BJP-RSS meeting. Coordin-ation between Sangh Parivar affiliates for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls was also discussed. RSS and BJP leaders discussed threadbare the party’s position in each state. There was speculation that the PM candidate issue was also discussed at the seven-hour meeting, but BJP president Rajnath Singh denied this, saying the discussion was on “economic, social and strategic issues” with political issues off the agenda. The Parivar wants the BJP to blend “Hindutva” within its development and good governance plank. After the RSS-BJP coordination meeting, the campaign committee led by Mr Modi held a review meeting of sub-committees. The party plans to launch its poll campaign after August 15 from states like MP and Rajasthan where Assembly polls are scheduled.
