'Only two of 38 unsafe buildings evacuated so far'

New Delhi: With no arrangements yet in place for evacuated residents, of the 38 unsafe buildings served notices only two have been vacated so far, a senior Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) official said here Thursday.

After the collapse of a five-storey building in an east Delhi colony on Monday killed 69 people, the MCD on Wednesday issued notices to 38 buildings in the neighbourhood, after they were deemed too dangerous for people to be living in.

Speaking to IANS, municipal Standing Committee chairman Yogendra Chandolia said: "On the basis of a survey carried out in Lalita Park and adjoining colonies, it was found that Yamuna river water had entered basements of many buildings. The water might have seeped into the foundation of the buildings, thereby posing danger to the structures. Owners and residents of these buildings have been served notices to vacate the buildings at the earliest."

Chandolia, however, said only two out of the 38 buildings that were served notices have been vacated so far.

"After three days, our officials will make a survey of the buildings to see how they can be made safe," he said.

But, while the notice has been given, there is no sign yet of proper planning or arrangements for living for the hundred evacuated residents, with the mercury sliding down at night.

The MCD said that it has not made any immediate arrangements for the evacuated people's accommodation as it is the Delhi government's responsibility.

"We are not making any alternative arrangements, but if they need immediate habitation, MCD can allow them to stay in the community centres nearby, but we have not decided upon it yet," Chandolia added.

The state of the residents of the first three buildings, which were vacated on Tuesday, does not inspire confidence about the arrangements.

According to the residents, they are living in filthy conditions at the community hall in Laxmi Nagar.

"We have no food or other basic supply here and about a hundred people are just packed in. The worst is that the dead bodies are also being brought here," said Sandhya Haldar, a resident, said.
