ONGC engineer gets 4-year RI
The CBI court on Monday convicted an ONGC deputy-superintending engineer (production) of four years rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case.
Special court judge Ikramul Hussain, while delivering the judgment in the open court against accused engineer C.P. Parate observed, “The acts of accused person is said to be corruption which is like a cancerous disease affecting the human society and development of the state. It should be borne in the mind that public servant should owe to the state in general and the department in particular in discharging his official duties. The department in which the public servant is working cannot prosper without their sincerity and honesty in works and unless the department prospers, the country cannot prosper. So for the sake of our country, measures should be taken to stop corruption.”
Justice Hussain further said, “The amount received by accused Parate through illegal and corrupt means by submitting false documents may not be large for institution like ONGC but the intention of the accused to deceive the institution is not excusable.”
The court said, “Taking into consideration of all facts and circumstances of the case and also the statements made by the accused on the point of sentence, I convict the accused and sentence him to suffer rigorous imprisonment of four years and pay a fine of `10,000 under Section 420 IPC.”
The court also directed that all the sentences will run concurrently. The deputy-superintending engineer of the ONGC was convicted for fraudulently claiming an amount of `60,397 from ONGC Sibsagar in 1997-98 by presenting false bill and fake claims.
