One killed in clash between police, JVM(P) activists
One person was killed and over 12 others were injured when a stampede broke out during a clash between agitating activists of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric) and police here on Monday.
JVM(P) was scheduled to hold an agitation at Birsa Chowk near Jharkhand Assembly to put pressure on Arjun Munda government on a charter of demands, including addressing the long-standing displacement issue, and the police had put up a barricade three km away near DPS School to foil them, police said.
As the agitators broke through the barricade to go ahead, police resorted to lathicharge and burst tear gas shells, following which a stampede broke out and man was crushed to death under the barricade as the agitators climbed on it to flee the spot.
Over 12 others, including police personnel, were also injured, superintendent of police Vipul Shukla said. It was not yet clear whether the man was a protestor or a bystander, Shukla said.
JVM president and Lok Sabha member Babulal Marandi had announced the agitation near the state Assembly to put pressure on Arjun Munda government on a charter of demands, including addressing the long-standing displacement issue.
