NRIs prefer Jaya as PM, claims poll

A majority of the NRIs prefer Ms J. Jayalalithaa to be India’s Prime Minister. Her Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi is only their second choice, according to an e-poll done by a Dubai-based HR consultant Pon Mohaideen Pitchai.

Ms Jayalalithaa has scored 86 points against 81 secured by Mr Modi while the Congress choice Rahul Gandhi could manage just 53 in the survey that listed various leadership criteria, such as education, experience, leadership skills, national outlook, mass support, economic knowledge, secular credentials and perfectionism. The interviews were done through e-mail and telephone with NRIs in the Gulf, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and also India, according to Dr Pitchai.
“Over 75 per cent of the respondents saw a political vacuum now prevailing in India and felt that Ms Jayalalithaa and Mr Modi were among the best available leaders to fill that vacuum,” Dr Pitchai said, explaining that the NRIs interviewed had their roots in India and knew the reality of Indian politics and leadership issues.
The NRIs felt that as India badly needed FDI to improve infrastructure, public health, water supply and energy, that can be triggered only through proper governance and accountability in administration. “Both Ms Jayalalithaa and Mr Modi can bring such integrity and accountability. Ms Jayalalithaa has that will power and determination. Surely, she has the vision of Lee Kuann Yew who transformed Singapore,” said Dr Pitchai, quoting from his study findings.
Among the positives noticed by the NRIs in the TN CM are her faith in secular democracy, perfectionism, mass support and the ability to convey to people across the country being a multi-linguist. Also, her deep understanding of crucial issues, diplomatic skills, social and economic knowledge that delivers best results and the bold willingness to make even unpopular decisions if they promise better life to the people, impressed the NRIs, according to Dr Pitchai’s study.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
