Notice to Karunanidhi for anti-Hindu remarks

Chennai: The Madras HC on Friday, permitted a petitioner to issue private notice by way of courier/speed post or telegram to former CM and DMK leader M. In a petition, B.R. Gauthaman, director, Vedic Science Research Centre, Mylapore, stated that at a meeting largely attended by Christians and Muslims on October 24, 2002, Karunanidhi, who was then chief minister, said the meaning of ‘Hindu’ was ‘thief’.
The petitioner contended that as a person belonging to Hindu religion, he was hurt by the statement.
Gauthaman had submitted a petition to inspector, Mambalam police station, on October 25, 2002 and lodged another complaint with the commissioner. Karunanidhi issued an advertisement in a Tamil eveninge on October 28, justifying his earlier remark.
Gauthaman filed another complaint alleging that this clarification itself was a wrong quote. As there was no action, he filed a criminal original petition and the high court, on November 17, 2005, directed the Mambalam police to register a case if any prima facie offence was made out or to dispose of the complaint in accordance with law.
Following this, the police registered an FIR on January 6, 2006. However, no action was taken. Hence, the present petition.
