‘Non-performance’ led to UP shakeup
The Congress on Monday removed all eight zonal presidents in UP. They were appointed as zonal presidents only late last year and there were complaints of “non-performance” against them in reaching out to the people.
The move to have zonal presidents and vice-presidents was the brainchild of Mr Rahul Gandhi as a part of his plans to tone up the organisation.
The new zonal in-charges are: Pankaj Malik, MLA, Deepak Kumar, former minister, Vinod Chowdhery, former MLA, Digvijaya Singh, Lalitesh Pati Tripathi, MLA, Bhagwati Chaudhary, Sanjay Kapoor, MLA and Dr Muslim, MLA. Of these, Mr Malik and Tripathi had earlier been zonal vice-presidents.
The new zonal coordinators are: Virendra Singh “Guddu”, Dilnawaz, MLA, Bansidhar Raj, former minister, Aslam Rainee, Chandra Shekhar Singh, Virendra Chowdh-ery, Phoolwati Saini and Yogesh Dixit. Of these, Ms Rainee was a Zonal Vice-President in the outgoing setup. Reports had it that Mr Gandhi had taken a dim view of the functioning of the zonal presidents as several of them failed to visit even the district headquarters under their charge.

Revolt in Congress over RS candidate
manoj anand
Guwahati, May 20
In what has given new twist to Rajya Sabha elections in Assam, a group of 25 legislators, who rallied behind chief minister Tarun Gogoi during dissident activities, here on Monday announced that they will be voting for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but have reservation over the name of second candidate Santiuse Kujur.
Asserting that at least 25 Congress legislators from Upper Assam and Lower Assam are non-committal on supporting the second party candidate, former minister and veteran Congress MLA Anjan Dutta told this newspaper, “The selection of candidate has sent a very wrong message that my party was listening to the grievances of only those tribal groups, which is taking to arms.”
Pointing out that population of Koch Rajbongshi community is about 65 lakh, which is equal to tea tribes, Mr Dutta said, “The tea tribe community has its representation everywhere starting from union council of ministers to state cabinet but Koch Rajbongshi community has been deprived all over. Even in Rajya Sabha nomination their hope has shattered.”
