No discussion in Cabinet on K’taka report
With the Union Cabinet at its meeting on Thursday not discussing the Karnataka Governor Hansraj Bhardwaj’s special report recommending imposition of President’s rule in the state, it appears that the government has decided to ignore the recommendations and let the BJP government led by B.S. Yeddyeurappa continue for a while.
Ruling out the possibility of any constitutional crisis in the state on account of Centre’s inaction on the Governor’s report, sources in the government said, if the need is to pass the state budget for the current financial year (2011-12), the Assembly could be convened, as there is no requirement of Union government’s permission. “The Governor does not require the Centre’s permission to call a session of the Assembly for passing the budget. It is just a routine exercise, which is well within his ambit,” they added.
Asked by reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting whether the Governor’s report came up for discussion, information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni’s cryptic response was “no” and then she refused to take any further question on the issue.
Mr Bhardwaj had sent the special report on Sunday recommending dismissal of the BJP government.
