No contact was initiated with Kayani, says PMO
The Prime Minister’s Office dismissed as “false” a report in The Times of London that Dr Manmohan Singh initiated back-channel talks between an “unofficial” Indian envoy and the Pakistan Army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, around 10 months ago.
“We have seen media reports quoting a British newspaper saying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had contacted the Pakistan Army chief before the Mohali meeting between the two Prime Ministers. The report is false,” Harish Khare, the PM’s media adviser, said in a statement.
Dr Singh and Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani met in Mohali on March 30 on the sidelines of the India-Pakistan World Cup semi-final match.
London’s Times reported Saturday that the Indian PM had appointed an “unofficial envoy” to make contact with Gen. Kayani, who exercises de facto control over Pakistan’s foreign policy, and this was encouraged by the United States and Britain.
