No black clothes for Akhilesh’s function
In a bizarre diktat, Ms Sarika Mohan, the district magistrate of Bijnore ordered that the girls who had been listed to receive cheques under Kanya Vidya Dhan Yojana and Hamari Beti Uska Kal from chief minister Akhilesh Yadav at a function in Rampur on Monday should not wear black dresses or jeans with tops.
While majority of the girls complied with the order, some girls did turn up in black cardigans at the function on Monday and were roughed up by the security personnel.
The district magistrate had taken this decision at a meeting of officials on Sunday but the matter came to light when some Muslim girls protested saying that wear “burqas” that are mostly black in colour.
The district magistrate’s order categorically said that “the beneficiaries of Kanya Vidya Dhan Yojana and ‘Hamari Beti Uska Kal’ will leave for the proposed programme in Rampur in simple dresses. No girl will go there in black dresses, dupatta or cardigan. They will also not be allowed to wear jeans or top. All parents must send their wards in simple dresses. They will also not wear jewellery.”
Later, when local reporters asked her about the reason behind this decision, the district magistrate asked them not to whip up a controversy over a non-issue. It may be recalled that the state government gives `30,000 to an intermediate pass girl student to continue her education under Kanya Vidya Dhan Yojana. “Hamari Beti Uska Kal” is a new scheme that was launched by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday.
