NCP: Speaker gave ‘anticipatory bail’
The NCP, a key constituent of the UPA government, is not in favour of the imposition of President’s Rule in Karnataka, saying it should be the last resort. But it came down heavily on the BJP government for “murdering the democracy” and criticised the Assembly Speaker the way he disqualified MLAs.
NCP general secretary D.P. Tripathi on Tuesday told reporters here that the “anticipatory disqualification” of MLAs by Karnataka Speaker K.G. Bopaiah was “a brazen attempt to grant anticipatory bail” to the Yeddyurappa government.
He insisted that “there is no constitutional basis” for such an action by the Speaker and termed the exercise of confidence vote of the Yeddyurappa government in Karnataka Assembly on Monday as “cold-blooded murder of democracy”.
At the same time, the NCP leader said use of Article 356, providing for dismissal of a state government and imposition of President’s Rule, should be the last resort.
The statement assumes significance as the NCP is a key constituent of the central government and any decision on imposition of President’s Rule will have to be taken by the Union Cabinet.
Asked whether Mr H.R. Bhardwaj was an ideal governor in view of the allegations made by the BJP, Mr Tripathi said, “People holding such high posts should conduct (themselves) in such a manner (so) that they keep away from controversies.”
Referring to the Bihar Assembly polls, he said that the NCP would contest in 200 of the total 246 seats in the state after the Congress spurned its offer for an alliance”
NCP chief and Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar will be campaigning for party candidates in the elections. He would be addressing meetings during October 14 to 16 in the state. Replying to a question, he said the party would support Independent candidate Putul Kumari Singh, wife of late Union minister Digvijay Singh, in the byelection to Banka Parliamentary seat.
The seat was being held by Digvijay Singh.
