‘Naxals spreading wings in Assam’

The CPI (Maoist) is trying to make inroads into Assam and other northeastern states by taking advantage of backwardness and unrest in various ethnic groups.

Referring the arrested of top Maoist leader and central committee member Anukul Chandra Naskar in Barrak Valley few days back, the Assam director general of police Jaynata Narayan Choudhury told this newspaper that he was camping in Cachar district to rope in tea labourers of sick tea gardens which are either closed or on verge of closure.
It is significant that some tea gardens of Barrak Valley were in focus for alleged starvation death of its labourers.
Pointing out that CPI (Maoist) was trying to fish in troubled water, Mr Choudhury said that outfit was also targeting the youths of Motak and Moran communities, which is known, for sending a large number of school drop outs or unemployed youths to Ulfa in Upper Assam.
Admitting that they are yet to get exact number of youths enrolled by CPI (Maoist) in the state, Mr Choudhury said, “Though, they are at formative stage but have sizeable presence in the state.”
Mr Choudhury who lauded the pro-active initiatives of security agency to nip this menace at bud, said that CPI (Maoist) rebels were also reported to have organised some training camps for its cadres.
Informing that arrest of Akalanta Rabha by the city police earlier this month was a major breakthrough in its drive against CPI (Maoist), Mr Choudhury said that interrogation of arrested CPI (Maoist) leaders indicates that it has also succeeded in spreading its network in Rabha communities in Western Assam’s Goalpara district where frequent unrest and violent protest by masses has become very common. He however said that police was working on leads to bust their modules who have been funded by CPI (Maoist) central committee to form the “party” which is the first step of its modus operandi to spread its influence. Mr Choudhury said that there were reports of CPI (Maoist) roping in struggling forces of the state.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
