‘Naveen is nervous at BJP’s growth’
The BJP on Sunday said the Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik was nervous at the rapid growth of the BJP in several urban local bodies (ULBs) which are going to polls on September 18.
“The whirlwind tour by chief minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik for poll campaign shows his nervousness. Despite his desperate attempt, the BJD would suffer heavy losses this time as peopled have turned away their faces from the ruling party because of its neck-deep involvement in scams and scandals,” BJP state president Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo said while releasing the party manifesto for forthcoming municipal polls.
Mr Singhdeo claimed that the BJP would get 25 per cent of the 66 ULBs which will go to the polls on September 18.
“We are hopeful to win at least 25 per cent of the 726 wards where we have fielded our candidates. Winning possibility of all these candidates is very high,” the BJP chief claimed.
Launching a scathing attack on the BJD for its alleged threat to BJP candidates to withdraw from elections in Berhampur Municipality, Mr Singhdeo said although his party had lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission (SEC) on the issue, no investigation was done by the SEC.
“The SEC’s job is to make an impartial probe into the allegation of intimidation by the rival parties and ask the authorities to file police case. However, in Orissa, it seems that the police and the SEC are working together to protect the elements who are threatening candidates to withdraw from the election process,” the BJP leader said. In the manifesto, the BJP has committed to provide efficient, vibrant, self-sufficient and citizen-friendly ULBs.
“The BJP-led ULBs will ensure total efficiency in the functioning of the municipalities and NACs in the state. Adequate steps will be taken for ensuring proper sanitation, drinking water, health and good roads for the people,” Mr Singhdeo said.
BJD youth wing president Sanjaya Das Burma dismissed the allegation saying “the BJP is frustrated at its impending disaster” in the municipal polls. “The opposition parties, including the BJP, have realised that they cannot compete with the BJD which is growing in popularity despite their scandalous campaign,” he said.
. This is why they are trying to malign the image of the chief minister by levelling false charges against him,” Mr Das Burma added.
