Natarajan writes to EU on Carbon Tax
Minister for environment and forests (MoEF) Jayanthi Natarajan has shot off a letter to European Union Commissioner for Climate and Energy Connie Hedegaard demanding a reversal of the carbon tax on airline emissions.
The letter has stated that such a unilateral measure “stands not only in violation of the principles and provisions of the international convention, but will also not augur well for the success of future climate change negotiations.”
She has asked them to defer and reconsider their decision for at least a period of one year. The tax came into force on January 1 this year.
Several countries have opposed this tax and the Chinese aviation sector has gone public stating that it plans to boycott it. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson has expressed the hope that the EC “can take a cautious and realistic attitude and act carefully while consulting all related parties” on this issue. Issac Valero Ladron, EU spokesperson on environmental action, remains adamant that the tax is justified. He has said publicly, “Our law breaches no principle of international law.”
