Naidu: Nation is in crisis under Cong
With the BJP desperately searching for new friends, TDP leader N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday kept all guessing, while not ruling out return to the NDA fold.
After wrapping up his meetings with political leaders, which included an hour-long closed door meet with the BJP chief Rajnath Singh, Mr Naidu stressed that “nation is in crisis” under the Congress rule. He claimed that “whenever such a situation occurred, his party has played a positive role”.
When specifically asked whether he would be the convenor of NDA or third front after the 2014 elections, Mr Naidu quipped: “This is not the time to discuss politics. There is a national crisis. I have played positive role so many times in national politics.” He added that the “TDP will play positive politics at the national stage after the current crisis in Andhra Pradesh gets over”. He, however, did not respond to a question as to whether TDP would support Mr Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister. But Mr Naidu made it clear that he would play a proactive role in the national politics by stating “now, we have to play a positive role”.
He slammed the Congress for the current crisis in Andhra Pradesh. Mr Naidu accused the UPA government of treating the issue of division of Andhra Pradesh as an “internal affair of Congress”. He highlighted the “good work done during NDA tenure” by stating “I initiated economic reforms in Andhra Pradesh when Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee was Prime Minister”. He also stressed on achievements of non-Congress governments particularly those headed by NDA parties.
Mr Naidu during his stay in New Delhi met President Pranab Mukherjee and sought his intervention to find an amicable solution to the problem of division of Andhra Pradesh. He also met CPI leader A.B. Bardhan and JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav on Sunday in his bid to apprise the political leaders about the situation in Andhra Pradesh. He, however, said that he had taken a “P (people’s) turn when told that he had earlier supported Telangana cause”.
While the BJP is hoping that Mr Naidu would return to the NDA fold, the JD(U) chief is reportedly optimistic of roping in the TDP for a meeting of non-Congress and non-BJP parties next months. Mr Yadav is reaching out to leaders outside Congress and BJP for common agenda ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections.
